The Feelings of Inferiority Explained

Inferiority complex is to feel that one is inferior to others. The afflicted person can feel inferior to others because of his/her imagination or for past experiences. The inferiority complex is often subconscious, and it leads the afflicted individuals to overcompensate. Overcompensation can manifest in spectacular achievement or schizophrenic disorder behavior, or both.

This type of complex will always make you feel that you are lower than the others. Your reason for feeling inferior to others might be only caused by your imagination or by an actual inferiority in yourself.

It can be classified into two: primary and secondary inferiority feeling. Primary inferiority feeling is caused by an occurrence of helplessness, weakness and dependency during childhood. Secondary inferiority feeling happens when as an adult, you weren't able to reach your fictional goals of success and security.

The feeling of inferiority is caused by several factors, which are as follows:

  1. Physical defects such as physical abnormalities and speech defect.

  2. Negative parental attitudes and kind of upbringing. You may feel inferior when your parents are constantly reminding you about your shortcomings and are always giving you pessimistic remarks.

  3. Discriminations about your race, religion, family or sexual orientation.

  4. Mental limitations can cause it when you are expected to excel or when you are always compared to the others.

  5. To help yourself, you should think positively and remember that everybody is unique. Don't feel inferior and believe in your capabilities. Others might not be able to do what you can.

Symptoms of Inferiority Complex

  • Withdrawal from social life.
  • Seeking constantly for compliments from others.
  • Being rude.
  • Fear of making mistakes.
  • Extreme Sensitivity.
