Self Esteem and Money - Does One Depend on the Other?

by Carla Valencia

Just how important is self esteem?. Ask a group of college kids, and they'll tell you that it's even more important than money!. That's right. a recent study at Ohio State University shows that college students valued getting a boost in self esteem over a boost in their bank accounts. So, does that mean that money has nothing to do with how you feel about yourself?. Unfortunately, no.

Having money woes can lead to lower self esteem. For example, if you always dreamed of growing up and having plenty of wealth and prosperity, the reality of not being able to pay your bills or falling into foreclosure can make you feel like a failure. Or, listening to your kids complain that they don't have the fancy new toys that their friends have or the brand new video game that the "cool kids" at school do can make you feel like a lousy parent.

Money can play an especially large role in men's self esteem. After all, most men have been raised to believe that they are in charge of supporting their wife and kids. But if you don't make enough money and your wife has to go out and get a job of her own, it can make your self esteem take a nosedive. So, does this mean that more money automatically equals more self esteem?. Not necessarily!.

Whoever said that "money can't buy you happiness" sure did hit the nail on the head! Not having enough money can amplify your self esteem issues, but getting more of it still might not make you feel good about yourself. Take a look at people who were born into rich families. Sure, they have more wealth and prosperity than most people can even imagine - but some of them feel bad about themselves because they didn't "earn it". Or, they feel like they're not smart enough or creative enough to go out and make their own money. Simply living off of Mom and Dad's riches takes a huge toll on their self esteem, even though they have all of the material goods they could ever want!.

So, what's the solution?. Your self esteem doesn't depend solely on your bank account - no matter how much you have in it. Instead of focusing on money issues, focus on finding ways to improve the way that you feel about yourself. After all, believing in yourself is far more valuable than anything you could ever keep in a bank!
