Self Esteem and Valentine's Day - You Can't Have One Without the Other

Esteem Newsletter Issue # 62 - February 2011

Article by Carla Valencia

Valentine's Day is a special day that revolves around love and being with the one you love. But whether you're 18 or 60, you have to love yourself first, before you can love anyone else. If you don't, even the greatest of Valentine's Day dates will turn sour.

Low self esteem is a relationship-killer. If you suffer from low self esteem, you may not even know how big of a role it's playing in your relationships. But, whether you've realized it or not, self esteem can turn a great relationship into a disaster , while higher self esteem can make your relationships and your Valentine's Day! even sweeter.

People with low self esteem never have success on dates or in relationships , because they have trouble relating to others. They have a complete lack of confidence when it comes to social situations. Their fears of being ridiculed or judged can come off looking like disinterest to a date. Have you ever been on a date where you were afraid to make conversation, afraid to make eye contact, or afraid to feel comfortable?. Chances are, you never went on a second date with that person!.

Significant others don't want to deal with people who cannot help themselves. Now, this isn't to say that they don't want to be supportive when you have a bad day. But, if it always seems like you're in "victim mode", even the most devoted significant other will get tired of it.

Sadly, people with low self esteem do not believe they are worthy of being loved. They think that true love will never happen to them, so they don't even try to go after it - or they do everything they can to avoid relationships altogether. To them, not being in a relationship means there is no chance of getting hurt.

And, when someone does show a genuine interest in them, people with low self esteem tend to get confused or suspicious as to the "real reason" behind the affection. Those feelings can end a relationship before it even starts!.

So, what can you do to make sure that low self esteem doesn't ruin your Valentine's Day?.

Whether you have a date or not, pamper yourself on Valentine's Day. Try to spend some time with yourself, treat yourself with respect, by yourself a gift, prepare your favorite food, and take some time complimenting yourself. Even if you have a romantic date planned for later, you need some quality time with yourself first. That way, you'll have the best love out there - the love for yourself!

All best wishes ,
