Distorted body image
Self esteem Newsletter Issue # 16
“Our body is a vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care”. Buddha
Body image is the perception one person has about his or her physical appearance. There is a distorted misconception about self esteem and body Image. I have found that this misconceptions exists because our society teaches us to find beauty outside ourselves, in our body.
If you have a distorted body image you will perceive unattractive. On the other hand, if you have a positive image you will perceive yourself attractive. Dove Campaign shows these distorted misconceptions : no matter what the size women have the majority reject their body image. They see themselves larger and fat. This is the campaign results for body image statistics, is a high percentage:
- 90 per cent of all women overestimate their image size by an average of 25 per cent
- 40 per cent of all women see at least one body part as being 50 percent larger than it really is.
- Men distort their size far less often, and less dramatically.
As you can see there is a high percentage of negative perception.
On the article: "Working toward a more positive body image" .NEDIC staff; Revised by Merryl Bear, M.Ed. the following statement is mentioned:
"In some cases, because of the incredible "fear of fat" in our society, women tend to discount their successes in all other areas and have low self esteem because their body is not the ideal. One's level of self esteem is related to the evaluation that one makes of a number of attributes -- physical abilities, job skills, interpersonal abilities, family role, as well as body image. For many women, body image takes a disproportionately important part in the determination of self esteem."
Our self esteem is affected about how we feel and perceive our physical body and ourselves. The main reason men and women perceive themselves unattractive is root in the distorted media messages about the body. This distortion is also the cause of eating disorders and plastic surgery. I think that we have to get out of the distorted media messages trap and fear and just be ourselves. We are lovable just because we exist, and we do not have to do anything to earn this love.
Let's help a better world, how?. Just be yourself, enjoy, be proud of your body and take care of yourself. Accept who you are now. You are attractive and lovable. Take a look at this great video:Distorted body image and self esteem
Self acceptance - the first essential step to self improvement. Build yourself into who you want to become. Without that foundation, you may be building a house of cards.
