Three Ways to Expand Your Comfort Zone

I attended the Anthony Robbins’s seminar, Unleash the power within, last weekend and it was for me a learning experience about how to expand my comfort zone.

Even though there are many people that hate him , there are also a lot of people that love him. For me being there was an incredible experience. One of the events that blow my mind was that I walked on fire.

For me walking on fire and don’t get burned , something that I never thought I could do , was a proof that I can expand my comfort zone. After walking across the coals I was jumping up and down and screaming : I did it!!!!!. It was amazing see other people doing it too. But the best part was to see their smiling faces and the sense of proud and of course how they felt good about themselves.

By expanding your comfort zone you can increase your self-confidence and self-esteem!. Improving self esteem is not static; in order to feel good about you in any situation you must change.

How many times have you find yourself in a situation like trying to loose weight and you keep frustrated and negative?. You are feeling this way because you did not expanded your comfort zone. You must take the decision to go an extra mile in order to feel good about yourself.

Unfortunately many of us became comfortable with uncomfortable situations. Here are three ways you can change:

  1. Try something new. If you never spoke in front of a lot of people, go to a place were you could do it and just do it. Don’t worry about what other people are going to think about you or if you are doing it right or wrong. Push yourself a little more. You will be surprise to discover how much fun this can be. This will build not only self-confidence but it will increase your self-esteem. After doing something like this you will feel wonderful about yourself.
  2. Change your watch. If you are wearing watch in the right wrist put it on the left. By doing this you will become more aware about how safe you feel within your comfort zone. You can also by your coffee in a different place, change the furniture in your home and so on. These actions will help and you will have the opportunity to see things from a different angle.
  3. If you are training in a gym do an extra mile. Suppose that you are running 30 minutes 3 times a week. Start running 30 minutes 4 times a week. Of course in order to make same changes always remember to be safe. Depending on your health you might want to ask your Dr. first. Use common sense.

As Anthony Robbins said:” Small is better than huge”. Sometimes we try to do thing really big because we know that we will never able to do them. Is what we call self-sabotage. By doing small changes little by little you will start changing and feeling better about yourself.

That same weekend my watch stopped. The seminar was so intense (4 days) that I did not even have the time to by a new one. So , I said to myself , this is an opportunity. I am so used to look at my watch all the time that at the beginning I felt lost. But I ended up having more time and fun without the watch. Plus I really felt good about myself by understanding how safe I felt wearing it and how free I felt by not wearing it.

Start expanding your comfort zone and have fun doing it. Make a list of the things that you want to change. Then go back to the list, feel proud about yourself and give yourself a reward. I found this interesting definition at wikipedia that you might want to reflect upon it:

One's comfort zone refers to the set of environments and behaviors with which one is comfortable, without creating a sense of risk. A person's personality can be described by his or her comfort zones. Highly successful persons may routinely step outside their comfort zones, to accomplish what they wish.

A comfort zone is a type of mental conditioning that causes a person to create and operate mental boundaries that are not real. Such boundaries create an unfounded sense of security. Like inertia, a person who has established a comfort zone in a particular axis of his or her life, will tend to stay within that zone without stepping outside of it. To step outside a person's comfort zone, they must experiment with new and different behaviors, and then experience the new and different responses that then occur within his environment.

The Comfort Zone

I used to have a comfort zone where I knew I couldn't fail, The same four walls of busy work were really more like a jail

I longed so much to do the things I'd never done before,
But I stayed inside my comfort zone and paced the same old floor

I said it didn't matter that I wasn't doing much,
I said I didn't care for things like diamonds or furs and such

I claimed to be so busy with the things inside my zone,
But deep inside I longed for something special of my own

I couldn't let my life go by just watching others win,
I held my breath and stepped outside to let the change begin

I took a step and with new strength I'd never felt before,
I kissed my comfort zone good bye and closed and locked the door

If you are in a comfort zone afraid to venture out,
Remember that all winners were at one time filled with doubt

A step or two and words of praise can make your dreams come true
Greet your future with a smile, success is there for you!. Author Unknown
