Improve your Self Esteem by Exercising and changing your Eating Habits

Self Esteem and Weight by Carla Valencia

Well, have you been reading the diet books and trying everything to "eat right" and work out. But you still are unhappy with your weight?. If this is so, you need to understand that there is some very good news for you. The secret to successful weight loss is not found in books or trendy diets. It is found in your own mind. Yes, your thoughts are the key to your weight loss success. But, they are also the key to your possible failure.

If you are like millions of people who are overweight, you look in the mirror and say, "I am too fat". But when you say that to yourself, even if you truly are overweight and need to lose some pounds, you are only reinforcing that image of yourself in your mind. And even though you don't realize it consciously, you are programming your subconscious mind to keep you fat. You feel that you "are" too fat--that is how you define yourself. Consequently, not only will you feel terrible about yourself, you will also engage in behaviors that fulfill your negative self-image. If you are "too fat", why exericise? It's useless; it works for others but not for you. Why not eat those fattening comfort foods?. After all, you're just too fat anyway.

But the fact is that you may not be "too fat" even if you would like to shed a few pounds. You may just not look like the "fantasy people" on TV and in the movies and magazines. Those people get paid a lot of money to spend all of their time preparing to be in the camera eye. They have personal trainers. They can spend as many hours each day as they need to to keep themselves in "perfect" shape. And besides, they aren't necessarily better looking or sexier than you anyway! Why compare yourself to them? You don't need to be them. You need to be you.

What this all means for you is that self esteem matters when it comes to weight loss. Lose the weight for yourself, not for others. Be aware that you deserve to look the way you want to look and to look your very best. So you have made some mistakes that have led you to be overweight. Who doesn't make mistakes? Now, just correct those mistakes.

How can you apply strategies for increasing your esteem in order to lose weight?

  1. Write down affirmations that program your mind to start leading you to lose weight. Never write down "I am too fat". Also never write down negatives like "I don't want to be fat anymore". You must write down positives. "I know that I have the power to reach my ideal weight." "I am now choosing to reach my ideal weight." Always present-tense, always positive, but always true. Don't say that you are at your ideal weight right now--you aren't!. Write down your affirmations 20 times (or more) every day until they flow through your mind always.
  2. Change your behavior. Get up and start exercising. Start eating balanced diets. Never starve yourself--it doesn't work and it makes you miserable. In fact, eat more times per day but eat less each time. This keeps your metabolism burning hotter, and it is more in tune with humans' natural bodily needs anyway. Eat four to six times each day.
  3. Do not count calories. Simply switch to getting your calories from healthier sources. Eat fruit, not cake and ice cream. Drink V-8 or lemon water, not soda. Have boiled potatoes with sour cream, not french fries.
  4. Give yourself one "naughty day" each week where you just eat and drink whatever you want. This makes the other six days where you are disciplined and stay away from white breads and white rice and refined sugar and fried foods more rewarding. Discipline is always much stronger when there is going to be some reward for it. Plus, your "naughty day" makes you realize that you don't have to be "perfect". .

Self esteem is the key to weight loss, not the other way around. Have self esteem first and you'll lose all the weight that you want to lose.
