When you lack self esteem you self-sabotage. Self-sabotage is a pattern of behavior which you use mostly or completely subconsciously to prevent yourself from having what you really desire or accomplishing a very important personal task. Why would someone engage in self-sabotage behavior? It's the self-fulfilling prophecy of those who lack self esteem-- they believe that they don't deserve success or to have their deepest desires fulfilled; they are unworthy somehow. Low Self Esteem or poor self-image lead to sabotage behavior.

Self-sabotage behavior mainly manifests in two ways:

  1. One is where you reach a certain level of success or desire-fulfillment, then suddenly you "can't" go any farther no matter how hard you try, no matter what you think up to advance yourself.
  2. The other is where you attain high levels of success or joy, but then quickly and "mysteriously" lose it all (this does not refer to real personal tragedy, which can and does happen at times--that wouldn't be all that "mysterious").

Examples of self-sabotage behavior could include:

  • The young novelist who writes a super best-seller and makes millions of dollars only to suddenly descend into alcoholism and become unable to write.
  • A beautiful, intelligent woman who has been in a rotten marriage to a neglectful liar for years and has wanted a divorce but, when meeting the true love of her life, finds all kinds of "reasons" why she "can't" end her depressing marriage to be with her love; this might include "unintentionally" setting herself up for betrayal by her dishonest husband.
  • The entrepreneur who keeps getting different online businesses up and running and rising into what will be super success, only to abandon them because they aren't building "fast enough".
  • The football star who commits a crime so serious that he is banned from the game and must go to prison.
  • The Ph.D. candidate who gets involved with drugs and quits the university to get "high" all the time.

How to stop self-sabotage



  1. Take responsibility for it. You will need to be strictly honest with you in the mirror. Stop playing victim mentality. Don't blame others.
  2. Notice when self-sabotage behavior might happen in your life. See it for what it is. Always assess everything you're doing and ask yourself, "If I do this-or-that will it lead me to more success or cause me to lose or fail?"
  3. Realize that you are not only worthy of everything you desire, it is your right to discover and live a life filled with joy.
  4. Don’t judge yourself too harshly. Being self-critical is one thing; being masochistic is another thing entirely.
  5. Work on your beleifs. Deep inside you might beleive that you don't deserve success or you are afraid that something bad will happen when you reach it.
