The dictionary definition of success is a "favorable or desired outcome". Success then refers to the achievement of a set goal. Another definition is the "attainment of wealth, favor and eminence". The second meaning puts the word 'success' in the light of gaining material things, affection and adulation. The same dictionary defines happiness as "a state of well-being and contentment".

During these formative times, if we receive negative signals and messages we may later on suffer from low self esteem in adulthood. This is not good at all, because your self esteem determine how you interact with the world. These interactions include:

Success and happiness are concepts that are oft used in relation to one another. Is it necessary to have success to be happy? Does the achievement of a favorable outcome and the attainment of wealth, favor and eminence lead to a state of well-being and contentment?
Of course it does.  One cannot deny the warm fuzzy feeling one gets upon completing a project, or the elation of being on the receiving end of praise and adulation, or the satisfaction of  amassing a sizeable bank account.

However, the happiness gained from success as defined above, is fleeting. Soon, the desire to achieve new goals – higher and loftier ones – and the drive to accumulate more pretty things and more fortune and fame results to discontent and restlessness. When left unchecked, this constant pursuit of success becomes an obsession and higher ideals may be sacrificed. In this case, one ends up miserable and unhappy.

The ultimate motivation of every human being is happiness. Having success is an important part of achieving this.  It is thus important to assess how one defines success, because this will ultimately determine the conditions one would need to be happy. Certainly, the attainment of wealth, favor and eminence is not a steady enough foundation for enduring happiness.

Success is not so much what we have but who we are. This definition of success points to the internal qualities and the character of a person rather than to the external attachments one may gain in life. Money and recognition come as a result of living a life with integrity and passion. To come to this point, one must discover one’s life purpose and pursue it tirelessly.  An alternative meaning to success would be the pursuit and achievement of one’s personal mission. When one is attuned to his deepest desires and reason for being, one experiences happiness and peace.

Renowned self-help author Brian Tracy sums it up beautifully, “Happiness and high performance come to you when you choose to live your life consistent with your highest values and deepest convictions.”  Now that is true success.
