Excerpts from the book

"Here is an example of how the Stop, Drop and Rol process worked for me. When I was in my twenties, I was struggling with depression and anxiety. I was also a pretty good handball player. I signed up to play in a tournament al thought I struggled somewhat with anxiety about performing well in it. Unfortunately, I lost a match to another pretty good payer, even though I'd felt ahta I should have been able to beat him.

Afterwards, as I left the gymnasium, I noticed that i was starting to get depressed, I felt back, sinking feeling in my chest and I was thinking negative thoughts. When I noticed this, I was able to sort of emotionally back up. I took a time out and looked at what had happened. My usual response would have been to spend several hours in a dour depressed state. Since it was a Friday, it could have fuinded my whole weekend. Instead, I was able to realize that losing the match was not the end of the wourdl and wouldn't;t destroy my weekend. Later, I called my opponent and arranged for a non-tournament rematch and I won"

" Anger and mood disiorders: Anger plays a central role in major depression and in all depressive behavior. Therapist define depression as anger turned against the self, combined with a sense of hopelessness or helplessness. You can see this in some of the classic depressive thoughts like "I don't deserve anuthing good in my life" or " Iam worthless". If you look closely, yo can see the directed anger contained in theses thoughts. When depressive thoughts are said out loud, as if they were said to some none else, you can see how angry they sound. The thoughts become: you don't deserve anything good in life and you are worthless. Those are mean an angry things to say to someone.."

Editorial Reviews

Conventional wisdom views anger as red-hot yelling and screaming, a force to be feared and repressed. But psychotherapist John Rifkin views anger in a revolutionary way -- as the natural energy created to heal one's emotional injuries. John Rifkin explains how to identify dysfunctional uses of anger so that readers can "unbend" it and become empowered and self-nurturing. To do so, he explains his Stop, Drop, and Roll system, which he's used with clients for more than 20 years. In addition, John Rifkin explores the childhood roots of anger, the spectrum of angry behavior, how anger can be a gift to a relationship, and ice-cold passive-aggressive anger.

From the Inside Flap: Dr. John Rifkin has crafted a profound yet easy-to-understand roadmap of the key emotions that drive our lives. This is a ‘must-read’ for people trapped in the whirlpool of anger, sadness, or fear. The take-home value is immediate." - Jim Warner, author of Aspirations of Greatness: Mapping the Midlife Leader’s Reconnection to Self and Soul

A gifted psychotherapist, tells us how we can lead happier lives not by stifling our anger but rather by using it constructively. In his straightforward, down-to-earth style, he shares with us easy-to-learn techniques for achieving greater emotional well-being." - Evelyn Bassoff, Ph.D., author of Mothers and Daughters: Loving and Letting Go
